While this meal is an American standard, most places in the area can't get it right. However there is light at the end of the tunnel, and these folks got the combo down pretty good.

This little place serves up a little bit of everything, and just as it should be... greasy and delicious. A word of warning however, the place is all smoking.

Best Brew Pub

Mishawaka Brewing Company
Technically this is the only Brew Pub in the area, but we wouldn't list it unless it was good. The local brew favorite: the Four Horseman Ale.

Best Buffet

Grand Empire International Buffet
The food is fresh and tasty, the restaurant is amazingly clean and the staff are friendly. How can you go wrong? On a side note, as with most buffets, the prices goes up in the evening.

Best Chinese

JW Chen's Asian Cuisine (Formerly China Star of Elkhart)
Sometimes the difference between a good restaurant and a great restaurant are the people that work there. For excellent Chinese food (non-buffet style) be sure to check out this gem in South Bend.

Best Comfort Food

Cracker Barrel
Nothing beats the Cracker Barrel when you want to relax your daily woes under a river of delicious carbohydrates. Make sure to wear your stretchy pants to make room for all the chicken and dumplings, hashbrown casserole and cinnamon apples.

Best Desserts

Yesterdays
This little restaurant in an old converted house serves up some excellent food. However, where they really shine is in their amazing homemade dessert selection. The Key Lime Pie is big enough to share, but why share?

Best Fast Food

Culver's
What happens when comfort food and fast food meat? You get Culver's. Everything on the menu is great, from the soup in a breadbowl, to the giant hamburgers and the delicious frozen custard treats. For a special treat, ditch the french fries and get their homemade mashed potatoes.

Best French Dip

The Emporium
Old brick and brasswork surround you in this truly beautiful setting. Admire the majesty of South Bend's East Race River while dining on one of the best French Dip sandwiches you may ever eat.

Best Fried Chicken

When you think "Amish Restaurant" you can probably assume good cooking, but you would never expect a restaurant that serves thousands of people at once with the highest quality possible. This place is so busy, you can usually expect a wait to be seated, but that's OK. The restaurant is surrounded by little shops, and no matter where you are you can hear your name on the speakers spread throughout the complex. So shop, eat, then shop some more. Make sure to take home some apple butter.

Best Hot Dog

King Gyros, Edison Rd.
While there are a number of King Gyros in the area, for some reason this one stands out. The guy that runs it is truly Greek and he runs a tight ship. Order the Chicago dogs with fries. Please note they come with sport peppers. So if you can't handle the heat (I know I can't) make sure to tell them to keep them away.

Best Hot Wings

Buffla Wild Wings (BW3), Mishawaka
The wings are hot, delicious and come in a variety of flavors, your table is surrounded by a dozen or more big screen T.V.'s, and the service is excellent. What's not to like?

Best Italian / Best Seafood

Carrabbas
I know what you are thinking... Seafood AND Italian? Not only does this place have excellent Italian food, but their seafood is flown in fresh daily and prepared to your specifications. It becomes very obvious that Carrabbas wants your dining experience to be extraordinary.

Best Japanese

Hana Yori
There isn't a huge selection of Japanese restaurants in the Michiana area, but luckily that hasn't stopped Hana Yori from creating an awesome and unique dining experience. Their professional Teppan chefs cook right at your table, and the food is top notch.

Best Mexican

Fiesta Tapatia
While there are a number of good Mexican restaurants in the area, only one keeps us coming back. It's combination of delicious food that's not too spicy, friendly service, and excellent prices have won our hearts and our bellies.

Best Mini Burgers

Macri's
Mini burgers have become popular pub fare, but for some reason the burgers at Macri's stand out from the crowd.

Best Pizza

Pizza Hut: Niles, MI
Admit it folks. This isn't Chicago, so great pizza is scarce. However grab yourself a bag of Doritos and head to the Niles Pizza Hut. They're about the only place you can get a taco pizza in the area. Crunch up those chips on top and you'll find yourself one step closer to heaven.

Best Ribs

Texas Roadhouse
This dinner only restaurant in Elkhart delivers ribs the way we like it. The sauce is cooked on the meat and you can flip out the bones with your fork. Just when you think you are done with your full slab of ribs you look and there is another underneath. It's BBQ decedence.

Best Steak

Sorry, you just can't get a good steak in this area.

Best Specialty Sandwich

The list wouldn't be complete unless we tooted our own horn, now would it? LanLizards offers a tasty treat that's fun to eat in the Torpedo Sandwich. We take a giant tortilla, stuff it with meat and cheese, and grill it up. This original conconction is served up with your choice of dipping sauce. It is definitely the bomb!

Hacienda
This place is hard to classify. It's an Americanized Mexican restaurant we guess. No matter what you call it, the food is good, the prices are low, and the wait staff are friendly. Try the Chicken Wet Burrito and a Margarita. It's sure to please.
